The Heavy Pets Phish Post Party Atlantic City

After Phish’s “Little Feat” Halloween costume stomped all over the Boardwalk Hall on Halloween, The Heavy Pets laid down a powerhouse set of original music at Bally’s Casino in Atlantic City. The Pets took the stage about 2:15 am in the wild west themed casino where over 400 people gathered to enjoy the band's blend of funky grooves and dance music. Setting the vibe for the rest of the evening, The Heavy Pets played a fun version of “Hedi Sigismondi” followed by a crowd pleaser, “No More Time,” off their recently released self titled album. The energy in the crowd was extremely high with Alice in Wonderland, Kenny Powers, a double rainbow, and a very authentic looking Blues Brother grooving to the music. Perhaps becoming their trademark jam vehicle, “So Thank You Music,” guitar players Mike Garulli and Jeff Lloyd dueled it out for 30+ minutes. Getting back to the funk, Jim Wuest struck the opening synth line to “Dewpoint,” a song which features his vocals and masterful ability to solo on keys.

Playing well past their allotted time slot of 4am, The Heavy Pets showed no signs of stopping and played another song off of the new album with “Jackie Bones”. Although the song is about Lloyd’s dog, it showcases the absolutely ridiculous skills Justin Carney has to offer on bass. Wuest asked Dr. James Dunstan to join the band on keys for the song “Bibbles”. He ripped a serious jazz influenced groove and was eventually joined by Wuest to finish the song out together. After taking a quick five minute break the band came back on to play a few more songs including a new original from drummer Jamie Newitt who truly served as the backbone driving force of the band throughout the entire show. They wrapped things up about 5:15am and were incredibly grateful for the fans that had danced all the way into the morning.

Phish made their way into the Greek Theater yesterday for the middle night of their 3 night run. Once again, they began the show on an upbeat note with "Chalkdust Torture." The "Cities>Moma Dance" was also a solid look; especially due to the fact that it was followed by "Bathtub Gin." A tight 3rd set of the run on paper.
This night was not unlike the previous night though due to the fact that the second set was once again an all out rage-fest. "Rock and Roll" has to be one of the top 5 covers that the band is currently performing. It typically sets the stage for an exciting set when placed in the opening spot. "Ghost, Mike's Groove, and YEM" all during a second set...'nuff said.
The show did not contain any huge surprises, but did have a solid set list. One more Saturday night to go, then on to the rockies for 2 nights at Telluride.

Phish Summer Tour 2010: Greek Theater Night 1

Following an extremely successful first leg of their summer tour, Phish took the stage at the Greek Theater in Berkely, CA for the first night of a 3 night run. It was their first show since the stellar 4th of July show in Atlanta and is also the beginning of a tour that sets them up for multiple night runs at each stop. It is the type of tour that fans have been waiting for; it opens up the intimacy that is created between the band, the venue and the scene itself.
Although I have not heard the show, it appears to be a pretty solid continuation of the previous tour which is referred to by many as one of the best ever. Each set had a powerful opener and closer. The first set kicked off with the upbeat "Possum" and closed out with "Antelope." Not bad, but heavily topped by the second set which opened with a "Down With Disease" and closed with a personal favorite with "Fluffhead." That was not before they sneaked in a "Tweezer" late in the second set. The "Tweeezer" had to leave fans wondering if they would go on another "Tweezer" "Tweezer Reprise" surprise as they did during summer tour 2010 pt. 1. Those thoughts were calmed when they encored with an old staple "Loving cup > Tweezer Rep."
The Greek Theater gargoyles will be watching closely over the next 2 nights to see what Phish will pull out of their hats. This tour is set up so well that it could top the first half. Here is how the entire set played out:

Listen to Phish...Phrequently

The first leg of Phish Summer 2010 tour is in full force so far this summer. If you should just so happen to be in a similar, unfortuante position as myself, you are sitting in a place far, far from most shows. I plan to make the 8 hour trek from sunny Orlando, FL to the Atl for the 4th of July bash. Unfortunately, 2 shows will not Phill me up!
Lucky for us Phish-heads, we are fortunate to fein for a band that allows taping and we can therefore listen to our favorite band...for free! Of course, you can pay $$ and hook up the soundboard quality with sites like livephish.com and nugs.net, but rememeber the gritty days of tape trading?
Hopefully no one has forgotten that stack of Maxells that many of us used to hoarde. Those same 'ole folks are still at it in the tapers section. Only now technology allows them to work an audience taped show in to serious shape. I personally got away from listening to AUD recordings in exchange for the inexpensive, superb quality of SBDs, but recently decided to give the tapers another chance.
I remembered a site that many of you are likely familiar with called phishows.com, and was excited to see that they are posting good quality AUD versions of Phish shows. An even better aspect is that shows are often posted the following day. Don't be upset if you live in a far away land, just weigh out your options and take advantage of the free music available to you. Let's face it, SBDs have exquisite, crisp sound quality, but a good AUD recording can bring you just a little bit closer to experience.

Phish MSG Friday, December 4th

They nailed this show, the lights inside the garden were awesome and always getting more impressive. Steve Kimmock was packed. They played an epic YEM, Kill Devil Falls, Maze, Heavy Things and Seven Below (two songs which my old band used to play). Maze went went on as I was trying to navigate the narrow hallways and cryptic signs of Madison Square Garden. They may or may not have busted out vacuums but Mike and Trey performed some impressive synchronized trampoline acrobatics. Page has some new funky effects that make him sound like turntables. that is all

My at my friend from highschool who came to visit me fell on my badside and ran to the safe haven of the NYC jam community. We learned a good lesson. Not sure what it is but it has something to do with, surrendering to the flow. Phish shows are truly introspective learning experiences, Trey's journey and challenges mirror our own, and we are all evolving. This can be painful and I'm not sure if it's a good thing to "evolve" too fast. Cavemen had much less problems. If evolution of consciousness means the line for the guys bathroom is 3 times as long as the woman's, (at Steve Kimmock BB Kings afterward.) I question whats going on. Just an indication of the beta male qualities of indigo's/Phans kids.

I was questioning how to make the most of a job that is making me emotionally and physically sick (rush hour included) and how to make the most of it and stay healthy. How I myself can tap into the healer within which is all our ultimate potential. The answer came that I would develop yoga for programmers and people who are on the computer all day, this came at a perfect time were my awesome boss had to resort to taking codeine for back problems caused by his computer related job. All this inspiration came while I was completely sober too, it is just the energy of the people around you that can have you thinking in these higher minded way.

Having seen exactly half of Phish 3.0's 18 total shows and most recently the final four of the tour, I feel confident when I say "they're back."

I think the best metaphor I've seen tossed around to describe Phish's latest tour is that they're "firing on all cylinders."

So, rather than write a lengthy review of each show I'm just going to do the short version.

Personal highlight: not getting ticketed, etc. when pulled over 5 minutes away from the venue.

Musical highlight: surprisingly, Guyute (start at the 1:15 mark or the 4:15 mark if you're really impatient).

Perfect way to end the run: Frankenstein with Trey on a 5-neck guitar, Mike on the flame-cut bass, and Page on the Keytar that was once owned by none other than James Brown.



Some other notes:

-I felt like an idiot for paying face value for these shows (and Knoxville) when tickets were widely available in the lot from $20-$30. There were so many extras for the second night of Alpine that a ticket in the lot was roughly valued somewhere higher than a cigarette but lower than a lighter.

-It really seems like the band is trying to appeal to every segment of their fan base. Jaded vets and newbs, hippies and hipsters, frat boys and sorority girls, music nerds and DMB fans - they all go to Phish shows.

-The band is getting better every night. It is scary to think how good they'll be by Halloween, New Years, etc.

Again, the whole run was spectacular and these are only a few of the many highlights. The last time I was anywhere near this excited about anything was when Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls were winning championships and I was 10.

Top 3 songs I'm still waiting for: Llama, Sneakin' Sally, The Curtain.

Rolling Stone’s David Fricke recently spoke with the reunited Phish to get the story behind the Vermont quartet’s comeback album, which RS can exclusively report will be titled Joy. Three weeks after their triumphant three-night reunion concerts at Virginia’s Hampton Coliseum in March, the band and producer Steve Lillywhite spent three weeks in New York’s Chung King Studios, mapping out the 10-song album and recording all the basic tracks live in the studio. Joy “feels more like a live record than a lot of our live records,” guitarist Trey Anastasio tells RS.

Phish Reunion Announcement Today?

Let's just say it's been a good day so far. I was hired for a real job this afternoon and got home to this from HT:

"Is the Mothership preparing to host the most important gigs in the 25-year history of Phish? According to the Merry Swankster, the quartet is on the verge of announcing a three-night comeback run at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia. They actually claim that the announcement will come today, so you might want to book hotel rooms for March 6-8 on the Coliseum Drive Strip. We’ll see if today’s announcement actually pans out, but Hampton - a venue that’s hosted some of the greatest shows in Phish history - seems like the ideal place to kickoff the post-Breakup era. Stay tuned!"

Mike Gordon has added more fuel to the fire that is the Phish reunion rumor mill. Our own Evan Levy sat down with Gordo after his set at last weekend's Mile High Music Festival, and Mike made it clear we can expect to see the boys back together "pretty soon."

"...We've started to talk as a foursome... as doing some more stuff again... rekindling the Phish thing. There's a lot of talk about that, and there's no specific plan so I don't have anything more to say about it, but I think there's a good chance of it - pretty soon..."

"And I think there will be plenty of time in our schedules to do other stuff - and for me that'll be this band, and maybe some more movies..."

Though there's "no specific plan," if Gordo's already talking about leaving room in the schedule for his solo efforts, I take this to mean mean 'something specific is being planned'. You won't find anyone here complaining.
