Phish Summer Tour 2010: Greek Theater 6 Aug 2010 - Day 2

08/06/10 (Fri) Greek Theatre - Berkeley, CA

Set 1: Chalk Dust Torture, Guyute, Ocelot, It's Ice, Cities > The Moma Dance, Bathtub Gin, Stealing Time from the Faulty Plan
Set 2: Rock and Roll, Ghost, Mike's Song > Simple > Backwards Down the Number Line, Show of Life, Seven Below > Weekapaug Groove, You Enjoy Myself
E: Good Time Bad Times

Phish made their way into the Greek Theater yesterday for the middle night of their 3 night run. Once again, they began the show on an upbeat note with "Chalkdust Torture." The "Cities>Moma Dance" was also a solid look; especially due to the fact that it was followed by "Bathtub Gin." A tight 3rd set of the run on paper.
This night was not unlike the previous night though due to the fact that the second set was once again an all out rage-fest. "Rock and Roll" has to be one of the top 5 covers that the band is currently performing. It typically sets the stage for an exciting set when placed in the opening spot. "Ghost, Mike's Groove, and YEM" all during a second set...'nuff said.
The show did not contain any huge surprises, but did have a solid set list. One more Saturday night to go, then on to the rockies for 2 nights at Telluride.

Phish Summer Tour 2010: Greek Theater Night 1

Following an extremely successful first leg of their summer tour, Phish took the stage at the Greek Theater in Berkely, CA for the first night of a 3 night run. It was their first show since the stellar 4th of July show in Atlanta and is also the beginning of a tour that sets them up for multiple night runs at each stop. It is the type of tour that fans have been waiting for; it opens up the intimacy that is created between the band, the venue and the scene itself.
Although I have not heard the show, it appears to be a pretty solid continuation of the previous tour which is referred to by many as one of the best ever. Each set had a powerful opener and closer. The first set kicked off with the upbeat "Possum" and closed out with "Antelope." Not bad, but heavily topped by the second set which opened with a "Down With Disease" and closed with a personal favorite with "Fluffhead." That was not before they sneaked in a "Tweezer" late in the second set. The "Tweeezer" had to leave fans wondering if they would go on another "Tweezer" "Tweezer Reprise" surprise as they did during summer tour 2010 pt. 1. Those thoughts were calmed when they encored with an old staple "Loving cup > Tweezer Rep."
The Greek Theater gargoyles will be watching closely over the next 2 nights to see what Phish will pull out of their hats. This tour is set up so well that it could top the first half. Here is how the entire set played out:

08/05/10 Greek Theatre, Berkeley, CA

Set I: Possum, Wolfman's Brother, The Divided Sky, Funky Bitch, Kill Devil Falls, Halley's Comet, Sample in a Jar, NICU, Bouncing Around the Room, Run Like An Antelope

Disco Biscuits Announce North Coast Music Fest Afterparty

The Disco Biscuits - Camp Bisco 9
Adam Childs Photography

The Disco Biscuits announced that they will be hosting the official North Coast Music Fest afterparty at the Congress Theater in Chicago, IL on September 3 at 10:00 pm. The Congress is a bit dingy, but the large ballroom has become the home stage for acts like tDB and STS9 when they make their stops in the Chi.
The Festival itself has sort of flown under the radar but has an exceptionally diverse lineup that includes hip-hop, jamband/electronica, reggae and dj acts. It will be held at Union Park from Sept. 3-5 and will feature Nas and Damian Marley, Umphrey's McGee, Moby, De La Soul, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, The Chemical Brothers, Lupe Fiasco and Pretty Lights just to name a few.
It is hard to believe that they are basically giving tickets away to this fest. Check out this link to get a discount on group tics: TICKETS

Blackwater Music Fest Coming to Florida

The Blackwater Music Festival will be making it's debut at the Spirit of Suwanee Music Park in Live Oak, FL from August 26-28. The Spirit of Suwanee is known by many as the best festy venue in the state of Florida and has been host to the acclaimed Bear Creek Fest (to be held Nov. 12-14, 2010) for several years.
Normally first year fests are a little bit confusing and/or unorganized. You know, not a solid line-up or 2 good acts and a laundry list of groups that you have heard little about. That does not seem to be the case with the first installment of Blackwater. The 3 day event will feature acts such as Michael Franti and Spearhead, STS9, The Disco Biscuits, JJ Grey and Mofro, Galactic and the list actually does go on and on. They have also recently announced that Michael Kang of String Cheese Incident will be performing with Particle and that Boombox will also be on the scene.
It will be a pretty hot fest that should not be missed. If you think you can handle the Florida heat in August, hook up on a $160 advance ticket or plan on dropping $175 at the gates. Tickets include camping. Check out their website for more info - www.blackwatermusicfestival.com

Los Lobos Releases Tin Can Trust

Today the Grammy-winning East L.A. Los Lobos release Tin Can Trust, the band’s first collection of new original material in four years. At the week of release, Tin Can Trust finds itself reaching #7 on the Amazon Sales charts, and debuting at #1 most added at AAA Radio Charts and #2 most added at Americana Radio Charts. Look for the band to perform on NBC’s Tonight show with Jay Leno on Wednesday, August 11.

Across the board, Tin Can Trust is being hailed as some of the band’s best work ever:

"A seamless collection…There remains a vitality and freshness to the music
that younger acts will never match." - Associated Press

"There isn't a false note on Tin Can Trust. " - NPR Fresh Air

“Five Stars. A masterful album from a great American band, at the peak of its considerable powers.”
- Uncut UK

"Another thoroughly worthy installment...Los Lobos remains a vital creative force.” - Creative Loafing

The Grammy-winning East L.A. band celebrates the release of Tin Can Trust with a very special performance at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom on August 3 (full show details and complete Summer tour schedule are listed below). WFUV Public Radio will be on site in NYC to record the show and stream back in its entirety at a later date. In the meantime, get a sneak listen of the band’s new material: download a free track from the album at www.LosLobosTinCanTrust.com

With Tin Can Trust the venerable quintet once again redefines itself and expands its scope, while never losing sight of where they come from. And, like so much of Los Lobos’ previous work, Tin Can Trust is an album that speaks to the time and place in which it was conceived; the album’s title can be traced back more than a century, but for the band, it’s apt for the rickety state in which so many of us find ourselves—and our world—today.

The 11 tracks on Tin Can Trust offer the perfect balance of Los Lobos’ parts: the band’s lineup has remained uninterrupted since 1984, when saxophonist/keyboardist Steve Berlin joined original members Louie Pérez (guitar, drums, vocals), David Hidalgo (guitar, violin, accordion, percussion, vocals), Cesar Rosas (guitar, vocals) and Conrad Lozano (bass, vocals), each of whom had been there since the beginning in 1973.

Seven songs on the album are distinguished and genius Hidalgo-Pérez collaborations, including the opening track “I’ll Burn It Down,” which features a guest vocal harmony from blues-rocker Susan Tedeschi. Three others were written in whole or in part by Rosas – including the album’s two Spanish-language numbers: the cumbia “Yo Canto” and the norteño “Mujer Ingrata” – and display Los Lobos’ signature seamless infusion of Mexican folk songs into rock music. Also included in Tin Can Trust – a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “West L.A. Fadeaway” – offering a nod to the bands’ shared history that extends back into the 1980s when the Angelenos befriended and opened shows for their northern peers.

As with every new recording Los Lobos makes, Tin Can Trust moves Los Lobos into yet another new dimension while simultaneously sounding like no one else in the world but Los Lobos. Los Lobos’ unified vision and strong work ethic are evident throughout the self-produced album, but so is something even greater: “an intuitiveness,” says Los Lobos songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Louie Pérez, “that happens only from being in a band for so long.” As Rolling Stone once wrote, “This is what happens when five guys create a magical sound, then stick together for 30 years to see how far it can take them.”
