Review: Star Lake -> Deer Creek -> Alpine

phish new album article from rolling stone.com http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2009/06/24/phish-capture-famous-live-vibe-on-new-summer-album-joy

Having seen exactly half of Phish 3.0's 18 total shows and most recently the final four of the tour, I feel confident when I say "they're back."

I think the best metaphor I've seen tossed around to describe Phish's latest tour is that they're "firing on all cylinders."

So, rather than write a lengthy review of each show I'm just going to do the short version.

Thursday, 06/18/09 @ Star Lake

Personal highlight: not getting ticketed, etc. when pulled over 5 minutes away from the venue.

Musical highlight: surprisingly, Guyute (start at the 1:15 mark or the 4:15 mark if you're really impatient).

Honorable mention: You Enjoy Myself; pretty much flawless.

Friday, 06/19/09 @ Deer Creek

Personal highlight(s): sneaking into the pavilion seats undetected and avoiding most of the torrential downpour; watching the greatest band to ever grace this Earth kill it in the middle of a lightning storm.

Musical highlight: Drowned

Saturday, 06/20/09 @ Alpine Valley

Personal and musical highlight (of the run): The Lizards

Sunday, 06/21/09 @ Alpine Valley

Perfect way to end the run: Frankenstein with Trey on a 5-neck guitar, Mike on the flame-cut bass, and Page on the Keytar that was once owned by none other than James Brown.

Some other notes:

-I felt like an idiot for paying face value for these shows (and Knoxville) when tickets were widely available in the lot from $20-$30. There were so many extras for the second night of Alpine that a ticket in the lot was roughly valued somewhere higher than a cigarette but lower than a lighter.

-It really seems like the band is trying to appeal to every segment of their fan base. Jaded vets and newbs, hippies and hipsters, frat boys and sorority girls, music nerds and DMB fans - they all go to Phish shows.

-The band is getting better every night. It is scary to think how good they'll be by Halloween, New Years, etc.

Again, the whole run was spectacular and these are only a few of the many highlights. The last time I was anywhere near this excited about anything was when Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls were winning championships and I was 10.

Top 3 songs I'm still waiting for: Llama, Sneakin' Sally, The Curtain.

Umelt at Southpaw Brooklyn-Saturday

I've seen these guys play a couple of times and covered their Umphrey's New Years show for Jambase, they are pretty much the biggest improv rock band in Brooklyn (aka jamband for those not afraid to say it). I feel it's my duty as a head to to support these Bro's. Umelt will be playing Southpaw this Saturday, I encourage anyone reading this to go! Just follow the no hipster stickers.

Phish New Album "Joy"

article from rolling stone.com

http://www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2009/06/24/phish-capture-famous-live-vibe-on-new-summer-album-joy

Rolling Stone
’s David Fricke recently spoke with the reunited Phish to get the story behind the Vermont quartet’s comeback album, which RS can exclusively report will be titled Joy. Three weeks after their triumphant three-night reunion concerts at Virginia’s Hampton Coliseum in March, the band and producer Steve Lillywhite spent three weeks in New York’s Chung King Studios, mapping out the 10-song album and recording all the basic tracks live in the studio. Joy “feels more like a live record than a lot of our live records,” guitarist Trey Anastasio tells RS.

passing the torch

reuban has passed the torch to me, his blogger ally Alex Borsody, to pic up where he left off. He will come back and give a surprise post every now and then when were lucky. while some things will change a little bit and have some more info on whats going on where i am in NY, it will still be jam centric for SURE, Reuban just got back from Phish tour and I will be seeing them in Hartford CT. I will also have buddies sending me pictures and info from their own tour experiences. Next festival Camp Bisco then GOTV ☮

Lady Southpaw

So I posted on Hey Lady's performance at Southpaw a while back on Hipster Resistance and seems like I was getting traffic for people looking for this Brooklyn based singer songwriter "Lady Southpaw". She makes really interesting, eclectic music, with high BPM for runners, its catchy and kind of kitchy and definitely unique. A very talented women. As a musician you have to admire a female who really enjoys making music and who can get creative with beat creation software! She also happens to be a former employee of my current company Thomasnet.com.

This is my favorite song of hers, it is philosophical and damn catchy.
Here is a new Lady Southpaw download available here http://bit.ly/RqIpR

Hope the summer finds you all doing great! We are recovering from a very hot but very successful Bonnaroo and gearing up for the rest of the season.

I wanted to let everyone know that we are still looking for lots of volunteers for this year's High Sierra Music Festival. High Sierra takes place July 2nd - 5th in Quincy, CA. This will be Clean Vibes' ninth year working at High Sierra, and as many of the veteran crew and volunteers will tell you - it is a special place that truly captures the spirit and magic of all that a festival is supposed to be. We still have spots for both during show and post show volunteers. During show volunteers will work 4 four hour shifts - one shift for each day of the 4 day festival. Volunteers will be helping to service stations and sort recycling. Post show volunteers will work 2 eight hour shifts on the Monday and Tuesday after the festival - helping to clean up all trash and recycling in an effort to leave the site cleaner than we found it.

If you are interested in volunteering, just log in at:

Details on paying your deposit and other info will be sent to you shortly after signing up.

Underground Brooklyn Warehouse/Loft Party with U-Melt

Meanwhile this weekend while Reuban was on tour with phish....

U-Melt is a band that has a lot of potential, (I outline this in detail on the mighty Jambase) They are one of the few great bands of the new generation carrying the torch for the "jamband" genre; A word people in the music business shy away from now as it is synominous with anti-corporate anti-greed and anti-radio play. so basically it doesn't sell tons or albums. The whole concept of jambands is great though, going on tour, and will always be loved. Traveling the land of the brave and free and playing great improvisational music. My friend and partner in gonzo journalism Rob lives in this old art gallery with a really cool layout, a stage, sound booth and a bar. These guys live there and the place borders on residential/commercial. it has an elevator in the building so bands can transport their gear and all this really cool art laying around the owner of the apartment has kept there. Everywhere you look there is something mind expanding and best of all there are no hipsters! Even if there were, the vibe about the place has one just want to check their ego at the door and get funky, did I mention you can chill on the roof? Because this is not a proper "certified" venue it is totally illegal! which makes it a lot more fun, this is why the show could not be publicized and sadly very few U-Melt fans knew about it. Of course this made it extra special too. There will be some more unannounced shows coming up, and I'll drop a word on here or my facebook about them. Some other bands who have played there so far include The Brew and The Macpodz.
