Phish in Japan Mix

Our buddies over at Coventry just posted their favorite song selections from Phish's 2000 Japan tour, which they've been sharing their recollections of for the past week or so. If you haven't read these reviews yet, they're definitely worth checking out.

I'm off to the Atlanta to see moe. with Keller Williams, and should have a full report next week.

New Live Phish Release: 7/22/97 Walnut Creek, Raleigh, NC

This looks pretty nasty. From Live Phish:

"On July 22, 1997 Phish performed the second show of their United States summer tour at Walnut Creek Amphitheatre in Raleigh, NC. During the show, a thunderstorm of biblical Proportion passed directly over the venue letting loose a torrential downpour of rain, thunder and lightning that accentuated the electric nature of the event. The fearsome peaks of the storm synchronized with the peaks of the music, blurring the lines between band and storm. The most sensible course of action was to cancel the gig for safety's sake, but instead the band played through the Appalachian tempest in a thrilling confluence of art and nature. PHISH - WALNUT CREEK documents the collision between a force as imaginative and powerful as Phish in the summer of 1997 and the supreme forces of Creation. This show was hazardous and soaked to the bone but fortunately the tapes - captured from the multi-camera lawn feed and 5.1 audio - remained dry enough to provide the masters for this release, which showcases some of the most potent jamming and scintillating transitions of Phish's career."

Biscuits Busted on Way to Bonnaroo; Hilarity Ensues

This is hilarious! From Spinner:

The Disco Biscuits took their late-night set to new heights on Friday at Bonnaroo, performing straight on 'til daybreak. A three-hour marathon that went more than an hour past their 4am scheduled stop, the Biscuits had special encouragement to play their hearts out -- it was a direct order from Tennessee's Cumberland County police department, who stopped them en route, searched their tour bus, and wrote citations to certain members of the band and crew for carrying personal amounts of marijuana.

During the song 'Nughuffer,' bassist Marc Brownstein recounted the events with his typical humor and flair, claiming the officer hugged him and told the band to "play the best set of their life," even after confiscating their pot and writing citations. Brownstein then asked the officer if he could have just a small amount of it back so he could twist one up for the final 90 minute stretch to the festival. When the cop obviously said no, Brownstein told him he was going to do a search of his tour bus twice as hard as the police because he was sure he could find something left, somewhere. We're pretty sure he was right.

I couldn't think of a more appropriate to end this post than with a little 03/27/99 Run Like Hell -> Nughuffer

Review: City Stages - Birmingham, AL

Our friends over at Toxic Culture just went to City Stages, which took place last weekend in Birmingham, Alabama. It's nice to read a review every once in a while from a fresh perspective (i.e. someone who doesn't already hate everything). Here's what they thought: (Day 1) (Day 2) (Day 3).

Disco Biscuits "Kiling in the Name of" @ Bonnaroo Tube

This looks rowdy. Is the Barber glowing in the dark?

My Morning Jacket "Gideon" @ Bonnaroo Tube

We want more.

"One Minute With" Tube

My Morning Jacket "Evil Urges" @ Bonnaroo Tube

We need to see the rest of this show.

Bonnaroo Interviews

With all of the music coverage going on at Bonnaroo, there isn't very much devoted to that other thing that makes music festivals awesome: the people.

I guess the people conducting the interviews are radio hosts, and while they are kind of annoying, some of these interviews are priceless. I especially like the skinny wookie who can't get laid, the bro, and the tripping topless body painter. You'll see.

First Bad MMJ Bonnaroo Review?

Although I was not at Bonnaroo, I was surprised to read this PopMatters review of MMJ's Bonnaroo performance, which looks nothing short of awesome on paper.

"After slightly wearing down, I finished up my night at My Morning Jacket, who was surprisingly less than stellar this year at Bonnaroo (when usually they have legendary performances here; see 2006 setlist). The songs from their recently released Evil Urges unfortunately don’t fall in place with the rest of their set, therefore creating an inconsistent performance. This is the first time I’ve claimed this in my existence –- but I think the My Morning Jacket kool-aid I’ve been drinking might be slightly wearing off. Let’s wait for the next record before I jump too far ahead of myself."
